Science Fiction And Fantasy Writer's Chat 4/06/11 with John Klima

sffwrtcht:Many of you may be familiar with tonight’s guest from Twitter. @johnklima is quite active online. #sffwrtcht

sffwrtcht:When I started #sffwrtcht last December, @johnklima was one of the 1st ppl I invited to guest. Glad to finally have him on!

sffwrtcht :It’s only fitting then that the zine he founded and edits, Electric Velocipede is making the transition to electronic format. #sffwrtcht

sffwrtcht: Welcome @johnklima! Thanks for joining us! #sffwrtcht

johnklima: @sffwrtcht glad to be here! sorry it took so long to work a time out when I was free :) #sffwrtcht

sffwrtcht: John, how did you come to start Electric Velocipede? Where did the idea originate? And how did you decide to become an editor? #sffwrtcht

johnklima: I interned w/Jim Frenkel (of Tor Books) in Madison, WI while I was in college and cut my editorial teeth there, that was 1993-4 #sffwrtcht

johnklima: after graduating from UW-Madison w/degrees in English & Philosophy, I moved out East to work in NY publishing #sffwrtcht

johnklima: @BryanThomasS at Frenkel's we did all sorts of things from shelving books to filing to writing copy to editing etc. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:04:04 +0000 2011)
kaolinfire: @BryanThomasS I think I've got a process scraping #sffwrtcht now. Will check it tonight (Thu Apr 07 01:04:15 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: What a great way to learn! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:04:38 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I worked at a number of places and ended up at Dell Magazines working for Asimov's/Analog #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:04:51 +0000 2011)
johnklima: shortly after starting that job, my old college buddy/former co-intern Jim Minz (now w/Baen) told me there was an opening at Tor #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:05:39 +0000 2011)
johnklima: while at Tor I worked on about 100 books/year (new, reprints, mass-market editions of hardcovers, etc.) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:06:17 +0000 2011)
inkedhistorian: RT @sffwrtcht: Next Wed. my co-host @shadowflame74 intvs @inkedhistorian , Carrie Cuinn, Publisher, Dagan Books #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:06:46 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I loved my job, loved working w/authors, loved making great books, loved going to conventions and meeting fellow fans #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:06:48 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima What was your specific role with the books at Tor? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:06:53 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Sounds like a great job! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:07:11 +0000 2011)
johnklima: but the pay in publishing isn't so great, so I left Tor in 1999/2000 to become a computer programmer #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:07:16 +0000 2011)
johnklima: at Tor I worked mostly as ed. asst. so I made sure all the pieces of the book came together for the depts to make a final product #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:07:47 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Wow. That's a lot of details and responsibility. Tough job. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:08:19 +0000 2011)
johnklima: that could be anything from photocopying a copyedited ms. to mailing out ARCs to writing flap copy and eventually co-editing #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:08:20 +0000 2011)
johnklima: unfortunately, in 2000 the computer programming market collapsed but I got a job w/company that made software for publishers #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:09:05 +0000 2011)
johnklima: (now we're FINALLY getting to the meat of the story) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:09:22 +0000 2011)
johnklima: while the pay was MUCH better in the computer world, I missed working w/authors and making books #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:09:46 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: @johnklima No, it's great. You answered four other questions already. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:09:58 +0000 2011)
johnklima: it was a fateful Readercon (Boston area con) where I met Gavin Grant of Small Beer Press/LCRW who had a panel on making zines #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:10:25 +0000 2011)
johnklima: Gavin's contention (and I agree) was that every person in the room could make zine, and SHOULD; that seeded the idea for me #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:11:07 +0000 2011)
johnklima: from that panel we got Electric Velocipede, Trunk Stories, Rabid Transit, Say..., and Full Unit Hookup (most of us gone now alas) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:12:03 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Pretty impressive impact for the panel, though #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:12:26 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I knew a whole bunch of authors, I knew a whole bunch of publishing, I knew about making books, it seemed like a good idea #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:12:29 +0000 2011)
johnklima: you know, making a zine was going to be the road to riches LOL #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:12:43 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima If it is, I'll make one tomorrow. :) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:12:59 +0000 2011)
johnklima: Gavin Grant is a very good motivational speaker :) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:13:11 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: How many issues have you put out and how often? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:13:35 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I knew that the zine would lose money initially, but I wanted to make something I enjoyed and would work towards breaking even #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:13:40 +0000 2011)
johnklima: Electric Velocipede started in 2001 and we just had issue #21/22 come out; about two a year, give or take #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:14:31 +0000 2011)
Wyld_Dandelyon: @johnklima #sffwrtcht I see from your website that Electric Velocipede is currently closed to submissions. When do you expect to reopen? (Thu Apr 07 01:14:48 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: Awesome. Is it a one-man project or do you have slushies and other staff? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:14:51 +0000 2011)
johnklima: this year is our 10th anniversary and we will potentially get to issue #25 by the end of the year #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:15:04 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @Wyld_Dandelyon LOL Just steal my questions why don't ya! :P #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:15:14 +0000 2011)
johnklima: through issue #10 was done entirely by me, no readers, nothing, the first 5 issues were collated by hand! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:15:57 +0000 2011)
sandrawickham: @sffwrtcht Once again, I'm supposed to be working on my novel, but peeking in on #sffwrtcht *waves to @johnklima* (Thu Apr 07 01:16:10 +0000 2011)
johnklima: after issue #10 I added some readers, but did the rest of the person on my own through issue #15/16 #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:16:22 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima wow. Now that's hard work! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:16:25 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @Wyld_Dandelyon that depends on a lot of factors, mostly how/when issues #23-25 come out as those are already full #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:16:58 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @ResnickMike says the ideal Analog story is a problem w/ a solution while the Asimovs story is a problem w/ complications. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:17:08 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: How would you describe the ideal EV story? i.e. what are you looking for? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:17:10 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @Wyld_Dandelyon I don't like to hold stories hostage, so until we publish everything we've accepted, we can't reopen #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:17:44 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima I think that's very considerate toward writers #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:18:14 +0000 2011)
jkwak: Lurking in on #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:18:18 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @jkwak Welcome! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:18:26 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @sandrawickham *waves back!* #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:18:49 +0000 2011)
johnklima: the ideal EV story is a little hard to explain, and I think that's what makes the magazine so appealing #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:19:12 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: John̢۪s day job is as a Librarian, and, in fact, he̢۪s just starting a new position. Do you do all of your editing after hours? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:19:40 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I like things that are a little different, I like to see people try things outside the norm for them #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:19:40 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I like it when what's really happening isn't what looks like is happening, when there's something hidden, something off #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:20:12 +0000 2011)
Wyld_Dandelyon: @johnklima I certainly appreciate you not wanting to hold people's stories for months or years! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:20:21 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima For me, one of the best examples was a story about a bouncing boy @kenscholes did for you. It was a departure of sorts #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:20:23 +0000 2011)
johnklima: sort of the David Lynch equivalent of fiction, but not always creepy :) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:20:35 +0000 2011)
shadowflame1974: @johnklima why do you think everyone (who was on that panel) SHOULD do a zine? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:21:01 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: What are some of your favorite/most memorable EV stories? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:21:19 +0000 2011)
johnklima: the Ken Scholes story bit.ly/bTUXIg is a perfect example of a writer going outside their comfort zone #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:21:34 +0000 2011)
johnklima: do I have to pick? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:22:03 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @shadowflame1974 I think EVERYONE (all of you) should make a zine #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:22:17 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @shadowflame1974 because we all have unique points of view and a unique voice and zine is the perfect to get it out #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:22:45 +0000 2011)
shadowflame1974: @johnklima Great answer! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:23:05 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima The voice being the selection of stories and how they're presented in part? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:23:09 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Not if it will get you in trouble with writer friends #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:23:30 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: What are some of the things you̢۪d like to see in EV stories and haven̢۪t? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:23:37 +0000 2011)
jkwak: RT @johnklima @shadowflame1974 because we all have unique points of view and a unique voice and zine is the perfect to get it out #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:23:44 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I would say everything on the Free Fiction page is something I like pretty well bit.ly/g41vB #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:23:47 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Ken's story actually inspired me to try and stretch for an EV type story. Working on it now. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:24:19 +0000 2011)
johnklima: of the things on that page, the Caroline Yoachim story didn't get as much attention as I thought it should #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:24:46 +0000 2011)
johnklima: and of more recent material the Cyril Simsa piece is amazing (reminds me of @Hal_Duncan ) and the @darinbradley piece #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:25:37 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: RT @upwithgravity: #sffwrtcht Help @BryanThomasS & get his (autographed) SF book while you're at it! is.gd/748QOP Please RT! (Thu Apr 07 01:26:45 +0000 2011)
PublishingSpy: but the pay in publishing isn't so great, so I left Tor in 1999/2000 to become a computer programmer #sffwrtcht ow.ly/1c4wRT (Thu Apr 07 01:27:07 +0000 2011)
johnklima: of course the Jeff Ford story "The Way He Does It" bit.ly/b0afYB is the example I give for EV stories #sffwrtcht #settingthebarhigh (Thu Apr 07 01:27:11 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: What are some of the things you̢۪d like to see in EV stories and haven̢۪t? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:27:40 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I don't really have anything that I'd like to see and haven't seen yet; there's some amazing stuff coming in future issues #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:29:47 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: Has being a librarian taught you anything useful in editing and writing? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:29:57 +0000 2011)
johnklima: EV stories have so much different wild stuff happening it's hard to imagine what I would want to see that I haven't :) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:30:37 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Well, at least this way you don't end up with 50 subs of whatever you would have said. LOL #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:31:04 +0000 2011)
johnklima: the great thing is when I get a story that does something new and different; @darinbradley and Keffy Kehrli surprised me #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:31:23 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I was trying to be clever that way and avoid those 50 subs on a theme, but maybe...I don't see many stories that feature cooking #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:32:50 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Awesome compliment to those writers. I love it when readers tell me I surprised them. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:32:52 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Cooking. Okay, thanks for the chat. We all have to go write EV stories now.... Just kidding! Don't do that people! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:33:25 +0000 2011)
johnklima: it's hard to say what sort of effect becoming a librarian has had on my editing; for the most part it's stolen time #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:33:47 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I really enjoy being a librarian so it's hard to find time for the editorial/publishing work, hopefully I never have to choose #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:34:24 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima I wondered if you got to talk to readers more and got any sense of how expectations might be met/not met #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:34:25 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: Do you have any suggestion re: resources or approaches to research for writers from your library experiences? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:35:16 +0000 2011)
kaolinfire: @BryanThomasS erif.org/sffwrtcht-johnklima.php - it will keep running. :) I can get you more functional html and whatnot later :) (Thu Apr 07 01:35:51 +0000 2011)
johnklima: unfortunately I've worked in positions where my interaction w/the public hasn't allowed me to pursue that #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:36:11 +0000 2011)
johnklima: in my new job, I'm part of the library administration, so I'm rarely in front of the public #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:36:39 +0000 2011)
johnklima: at the same time, I'm hoping to bring some of my knowledge/expertise in genre into the library #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:37:14 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima So you really do know what librarians do behind closed doors... #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:37:18 +0000 2011)
johnklima: my editorial work has had a greater influence on my library work than the other way around #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:37:35 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima How so? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:37:47 +0000 2011)
Wyld_Dandelyon: @johnklima #sffwrtcht It's hard to find time for a creative life while working a demanding full time job. (Thu Apr 07 01:38:19 +0000 2011)
johnklima: I'm not allowed to talk about what happens in the library after dark; ask @jaymgates and @DWGrintalis they can tell you #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:38:24 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima LOL ok. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:38:55 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: What can you tell us about the transition EV is making? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:39:04 +0000 2011)
johnklima: in several ways: my knowledge of publishing and the book industry has a direct impact when I order books #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:39:07 +0000 2011)
johnklima: my connections to the industry help make interesting programming (bringing in authors) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:39:25 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Oh yes, I'll be that's true #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:39:44 +0000 2011)
johnklima: and my editorial work brings some cachet to the library as one of their members giving back to the library world at large #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:40:04 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Bet you have better knowledge of how to market to libraries, too #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:40:35 +0000 2011)
johnklima: our transition to being an online publication has been fraught w/a slow deliberate pace that we can't hasten lol #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:40:40 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima When can we expect to see a new issue? #sffwrtcht #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:41:01 +0000 2011)
shadowflame1974: @sffwrtcht @johnklima so you kind of see yourself as the glue holding lots of things together? (Thu Apr 07 01:41:19 +0000 2011)
johnklima: we wanted EV 21/22 out end of 2010, then 23 in May as the first elec issue, with 24 in Aug and 25 in Nov #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:41:20 +0000 2011)
johnklima: EV 21/22 was at the printer at the end of Nov 2010, but only just recently got paid and sent out into the world #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:41:59 +0000 2011)
johnklima: since it's April, and we haven't started work on EV 23, it won't come out in May (and there's my whole new job and moving thing) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:42:51 +0000 2011)
johnklima: we have to revisit our schedule; I still would like to get out issues 23-25 this year; that might mean content in July, Sept, Nov #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:43:50 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @shadowflame1974 yes, and that glue can get a little dry and brittle at times :) LOL #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:44:16 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: How is editing an anthology different from editing EV? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:44:25 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @Wyld_Dandelyon absolutely, it's torture, and w/family thrown in, I have to essentially not sleep to get any work done #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:44:46 +0000 2011)
johnklima: an original anthology isn't too different from an issue except it's longer (and you likely have a bigger budget) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:45:45 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Do all of your anthologies originate with you or have publishers recruited you for their own ideas? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:45:59 +0000 2011)
johnklima: you still get the submissions, review them, accept them, edit them, edit them, copyedit, proofread, publish, cross fingers #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:46:28 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: I doubt anyone would complain getting three EV issues so close together. :) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:46:32 +0000 2011)
johnklima: a reprint anthology is different; it requires research into a theme and deciding if there's enough content to make a book #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:47:29 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: RT @jasonsanford: And just FYI, I'll also be releasing an ebook collection of my stories in a few weeks. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:47:31 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: RT @jasonsanford: And just FYI, I'll also be releasing an ebook collection of my stories in a few weeks. #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:47:32 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima How do you research a theme like that? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:47:51 +0000 2011)
johnklima: the only person who might complain about the three issues close together is my managing editor @ninja_CE #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:48:15 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @papertyger they're all following me on #sffwrtcht right now (Thu Apr 07 01:48:54 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: 12 min left. Get your questions in please for @johnklima on #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:49:08 +0000 2011)
johnklima: so far all of my anthologies have originated with me, and then I've taken them to a publisher #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:49:14 +0000 2011)
sffwrtcht: What projects do you have coming up that we can look forward to? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:49:57 +0000 2011)
johnklima: researching a theme is reading lots of anthos and then seeing a common thread among stories (w/some big names!) #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:49:59 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Does having a lot more electronic zines to pull reprints from make it easier to find stories on a theme? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:51:00 +0000 2011)
johnklima: some time this Summer I have a reprint antho of fairy tale stories HAPPILY EVER AFTER bit.ly/faf8Ib #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:51:19 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: @johnklima Oh, very cool! #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:51:35 +0000 2011)
johnklima: electronic zines haven't been around long enough to give a theme at this point; but it won't be too long before they do #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:52:14 +0000 2011)
Wyld_Dandelyon: @johnklima #sffwrtcht Do you have any new anthologies in the planning stages? (Thu Apr 07 01:52:57 +0000 2011)
johnklima: @warmaiden they came pretty easily, it's free money for the authors, so even the big names are pretty easy to work with #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:53:12 +0000 2011)
BryanThomasS: RT @warmaiden: .@johnklima How much trouble do you have with permissions for a reprint anthology? #sffwrtcht (Thu Apr 07 01:53:37 +0000 2011)
